Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly and the newly-appointed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the war in Ukraine, border security, and trade during their first meeting.
The Canadian Foreign Minister reported this on X, Ukrinform saw.
“Today, with Secretary Rubio, we discussed the ways in which we can continue to collaborate on border security, trade and energy security. We also talked about how we work together on addressing key geopolitical issues, including the crisis in the Middle East, Ukraine and Haiti,” Joly wrote.
She noted that Canada and the U.S. are “strongest when we work together as partners and neighbours.”
For his part, Rubio said the meeting focused on “collaboration on border security, energy, and confronting China’s economic practices”.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump announced his administration’s plans to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada from February 1.
Earlier, unverified reports appeared that the Canadian government had prepared a list of American goods that would be subject to high import duties in the event of a similar step by the new U.S. administration.
