Retirement housing project at club site scrapped as McCarthy Stone and council fail to agree designs

McCarthy Stone has abandoned its initiative to develop affordable retirement flats at the site where the former Crosville Club once stood in Crewe, following a failure to agree design plans with the council. Initially set on constructing 51 age-exclusive apartments on Chester Street, the company withdrew their planning application from Cheshire East Council last month.

A spokesperson from McCarthy Stone confirmed to the Local Democracy Reporting Service that the firm is discontinuing the development and is in pursuit of alternate locations. The spokesperson said: “McCarthy Stone had proposed to bring forward a 100 per cent affordable development for older people on Chester Street, and all of the 51 retirement apartments would have been offered for affordable shared ownership.”

They added: “Unfortunately, we have not been able to make progress with the design of the scheme with the local council and as a result we have had to withdraw from the site.

“While we are disappointed not to bring this scheme forward, we remain fully committed to delivering affordable housing and support options for older people in Crewe and across the north west to meet the needs of its rapidly ageing population, and will now look for alternative sites.”

With the future of the Chester Street site now hanging in the balance, and the ex-club premises boarded up following vandalism, the area’s prospects remain uncertain, reports Cheshire Live.
